Grant Description

On July 16, 2018, Tanzanian government officials attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the Nyerere Leadership Institute (or Nyerere Leadership Academy or 尼雷尔领导力学院).

Prior to this event, the Chinese Government agreed to fund and build this Institute, which was jointly established by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the "Six Sisters” (a collection of ruling liberation political parties from Tanzania, South Africa, Mozambique, Angola, Namibia, and Zimbabwe).

The purpose of the ideological college is to train the next generation of government leaders in the region of South Africa. The total estimated grant commitment from the Chinese Government is $45 million (about 100 billion TZS).

The project also received funding from five southern Africa liberation parties — namely ANC (South Africa), Swapo (Namibia), MPLA (Angola), Zanu-PF (Zimbabwe) and Frelimo (Mozambique).

The school is located in the Kibaha district in the Coast region, covering an area of 20.5 hectares with a floor space of about 18,000 square meters. China Railway Construction Engineering Group was the contractor responsible for project implementation. At the time of the groundbreaking ceremony on July 16, 2018, construction was expected to last two years.

The project was expected to reach completion in June 2020. As of August 15, 2021, the project had achieved a 49% completion rate. However, it faced implementation delays to the COVID-19 pandemic. On February 23, 2022, an official inauguration ceremony was held for the Nyerere Leadership Institute.
