On July 20, 2018, the inauguration ceremony of Access to Satellite TV for 10,000 African Villages Project was held in Uganda.
The project was funded by a 12 million USD grant from the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund. 500 villages across Uganda are now connected to digital satellite television in a move to widen the digital migration coverage and increase access to information and knowledge for the rural poor.
In addition, the project will also train 22,246 villagers for operation and maintenance roles, boosting local employment. The commissioner of the ICT ministry has requested an expansion of the original project. A seminar regarding the second phase of this project occurred on August 8, 2021.
The second phase plans to select 800 villages and install 8000 sets of solar TVs, sets of solar projection equipment and digital set-top box equipment in the public areas and households of these villages free of charge.
