Grant Description

UNOCHA indicates that on August 2017 the Chinese Government provided $3,000,000 to Ethiopia through WFP to provide assistance to refugees (Flow ID: 165361 and 165362) along with another August 2017 flow of $3,000,000 recorded in UNOCHA to respond to the humanitarian crises and enhancing resilience to food insecurity (Flow ID: 165363 and 165364).

It has been reported that in March 13, 2018, the Chinese government disbursed the $6 million to the World Food Program (WFP) in Ethiopia in response to drought conditions in the country.

The WFP will use this money towards the 350,000 people living either in refugee camps or in drought-affected communities for two months with over 4,000 metric tons of rice and 800 tons of vegetable oil.

The grant came shortly after the joint appeal by two UN agencies, WFP and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), for 80 million dollars to provide food assistance to refugees in Ethiopia.

According to Xinhua, an estimated 7.9 million people in Ethiopia are currently in need of emergency food assistance, while Ethiopia also hosts more than 900,000 refugees, mainly from Eritrea, South Sudan, Somalia and Sudan.
