On March 27, 2017, former Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Liu Xianfa and Kenyan Finance Minister Henry Rotich signed a letter of exchange in Nairobi, pledging 21,366 tonnes of food aid (rice) worth approximately 150 million RMB (Sh2.4 billion or 21.7 million U.S. dollars) to Kenya for drought relief.
The relief food assistance is provided to 3.5 million people who are affected by the situation in the arid and semi-arid areas. On June 21, 2017, the first batch of 100,000 bags (7750 tons) of rice was handed over.
Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Wu Peng announced 21,366 tonnes of rice were shipped to Kenya within one year of China's initial announcement. As of June 2019, the project has been completed and all pledged food assistance has been delivered to Kenya.
