Grant Description

The purpose of this grant is for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to select two AAAS fellows to assist with the USFWS Division of International Conservations (DIC) work in Central Africa.

With an expected budget of $17.5 million for 2015 for USFWS activities in Central Africa (an increase from nearly $8 million in 2014), the fellows will be play a key role in meeting the Africa Branchs increased workload. The fellowships are renewable for a second year if agreed to by the sponsoring agency and the fellow.

This will be the first time USFWS has hosted an AAAS fellow and therefore an opportunity to evaluate whether the agency could benefit from the program in the future.. .Working in collaboration with members of the Africa Branch, other offices at the USFWS, State Department, USAID, host-country wildlife agencies, and NGO partners, the AAAS fellows will: .Fellow #1. 1) Compile information on USFWS awards in Central Africa to produce a 3-year comprehensive report and other outreach products, complete with photos, maps, and narratives for all FWS high priority landscapes, species, and programs for 2013-2015.. .2) Assist in the development of timely communication materials to respond to requests from Congress, other federal agencies and conservation partners regarding the USFWS Africa Program.. .3) Develop one or more 'white papers' to elucidate the state of a particular conservation issue in Central Africa, for example the impact of extractive industries on wildlife, in such as a way as to inform and perhaps guide our actions and strategic orientation.

Paper topics will be determined by programmatic need and the individual strengths and interests of the Fellow.. .4) Synthesize all outcomes and deliverables from FWS awards to track progress for all FWS assistance in Central Africa in coordination with support to new monitoring and evaluations standards in Africa grant programs, as developed in our Conservation Effectiveness Measures (C
