On June 7, 2018, Kenya launched the 800 Villages Digital Television Project at Kenyatta International Conference Center in Nairobi, funded by a $800,000 USD grant from the Chinese government and implemented by StarTimes Kenya, the Kenyan subsidiary of a Chinese digital TV provider. Reportedly, half of the grant amount was used to purchase equipment and the rest for implementation.
The project aimed to connect 16,000 households in 47 counties in Kenya with satellite television, and provided 2,400 public institutions with a satellite TV system and 32-inch television sets.
This project is a regional implementation of an Africa-wide project "Access to Satellite TV for 10000 African villages" (known as "Wancuntong,"[万村通] in Chinese) an agreement signed during the Johannesburg Summit of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum in December 2015 (Record ID#57618). The project was completed on December 20, 2019.
A completion ceremony was held the same day, and attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Wu Peng.
