Grant Description

Chinese Government pledges loan for transport infrastructure projects On September 8, 2018 following his official visit to Beijing, Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi announced that the Chinese Government pledged a loan to the Government of Botswana for transport infrastructure projects.

He did not disclose the face value of the loan, but prior to the visit the Botswana Ministry of Finance said they were seeking a P 12 billion pula (USD 1.09 billion) loan for road and rail projects. As of November 2018, the financing was still under assessment, and no commitment had been made.

This loan may have been allocated to the following three projects: the Motsetse-Kazungula Railway, the Palapye-Martin's Drift Road, and the Francistown-Nata-Maun Road (see Record ID#57892, #88502). The financial breakdown is unknown.
