On September 19, 2017, the Chinese government signed the implementation agreement for five community technical colleges in Malawi worth 100 million RMB, according to the Nyasa Times.
Other versions of the Nyasa article from AllAfrica and Mana, a Malawi government news agency, list the amount as K8.9 billion, which is approximately equal to 100 million RMB. The schools will be built in Ntcheu, Mulanje, Mzimba, Nsanje, and Zomba. The colleges will offer welding skills, computer technology, sewing, bricklaying, plumbing and carpentry.
The groundbreaking was held on November 24, 2018, according to the Chinese Embassy in Malawi.
The 100 million RMB financing for the five technical colleges was financed through a $8 million USD soft loan (#52446) and a $16 million USD grant (#52348), both signed on January 21, 2016. On Febuary 2, 2022, the 5 colleges were completed and handed over to the Government of Malawi.
According to the agreemnet, the PRC is still responsible for maintenance of the equipment and facilities within the two years after the handover.
