Grant Description
In March 2017, the Egg Road Rehabilitation Project was one of six projects discussed by Malagasy President Hery Rajaonarimampianina and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Then, on August 18, 2017, the International Economic Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and the Government of Madagascar signed a grant agreement for the project. The Chinese Government reportedly committed RMB 190 million of grant funding.
The Egg Road Rehabilitation Project involves the rehabilitation of a 19.25 kilometer road and connects three rural communes (Mahitsy, Ampanotokana and Mahazaza) located northwest of the capital city of Antananarivo.
It consists of road construction of a main line and five connecting lines for and related safety facilities, bus stops, and harbor-style parking zones.
The Egg Road (or Egg Route) is the only daily transport route for the 30,000 inhabitants of the three adjacent municipalities, 80% of whom depend on poultry farming production from 40 large local producers.
The idea for this project was reportedly born when egg producers complained to the Malagasy President that most of their eggs break en route to their destination due to the poor condition of the road. Jiangxi Zhongmei Engineering Construction Co., Ltd. is the contractor responsible fo implementation.
It pledged to recruit around 300 local employees to facilitate project implementation in April 2019.
According to the President of Madagascar’s twitter account and the Chinese Embassy in Madagascar, construction officially began on August 13, 2018. Then, in 2019, the Chinese Embassy reported that several sections of the road had been completed. However, the COVID-19 pandemic slowed the implementation of this project.
Its expected completion date is September 2021.
Upon completion, it is expected that the 7 km journey between Mahazaza and Mahitsy will only take 15 minutes, as compared to the current journey of 90 minutes. Upon completion, it is also expected that the "egg road” will allow for the transport of around 150,000 eggs per day. This project is linked to China funding the feasibility study of the Egg Road (#57648).
In February 2021, the road was 60% complete. In January 2022, the road has been officially delivered to Madagascar for use.
