Grant Description

China Eximbank pledges support for $2.3 billion Mpanda Nkuwa Hydroelectic Power Plant Project In 2009, China Eximbank pledged to provide a $2.3 billion loan for the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Power Plant Project.

This project involves the construction of gravity dam that has 13 floodgates and a 1500 megawatt hydropower plant with four 375 megawatt turbines. The project also involves the construction of a transmission line from the dam site to Maputo.

The planned power plant construction site is located in the Zambezi River Basin and would allow for low cost electricity to be exported to the South African Power Pool market.
