Grant Description
In 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping, together with the African participants of the Conference, at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation at the Johannesburg Summit announced this project, "Access to satellite TV in ten thousand African villages" (Chinese name: “万村通”卫星数字电视项目").
The StarTimes (四达时代) group was charged with implementing the project under the direction of the Chinese and African governments in the countries concerned.
The project will happen in villages across the rural areas of 25 African countries including Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Eritrea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
According to multiple reports on the projects in different countries, financing from the Chinese government is in the form of grants.
