Grant Description

China has been sending medical teams to Zambia since 1978. Henan Province is responsible for sending the teams.

The 19th medical team had members stationed at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital, University of Zambia Teaching Hospital (also known as University Teaching Hospital), Ndola General Hospital, and Livingstone Central Hospital. The team arrived in Zambia on May 15, 2017 and returned to China on June 14, 2018, working for a total of 13 months.

The team performed 2,924 operations, received 10,000 outpatients, completed 5,232 ward rounds, wrote 15,000 reports, and treated 123 critically-ill patients.

The team also volunteered at the Open Arms Community School once, House of Moses twice, Nakhicheite once, and various Chinese enterprises five times.

Additionally, the team donated an assortment of medical instruments valued at $120,000 USD to the hospitals (see Record ID#66583).

In 2009, the Chinese Government provided a grant for the construction of the Levy Mwanawasa Hospital (see Project ID #32627). The 19th Chinese medical team was the fourth Chinese medical team to have members stationed at Levy Mwanawasa Hospital. Chinese medical teams have been dispatched to Zambia since 1978 and should not be confused with Chinese military medical teams, which have also been dispatched to Zambia. The Chinese military medical teams are dispatched by the People's Liberation Army and not by Henan Province.
