China Eximbank pledges $20 million USD loan for Mpika Urban Road Project According to media reports, China Eximbank pledged to provide a $20 million USD loan for the design, construction, and supervision of the Mpika Urban Road Project.
The 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 Road Sector Annual Work Plans of Zambia’s Road Development Agency (ZRDA) indicate that China Eximbank was the financing source. However, ZRDA’s 2020 Road Sector Annual Work Plan indicates that U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) is the financing source.
This project involves the expansion of a 7.5 kilometer section of the Great North Road T2 highway between Kapiri weighbridge and Mazingo Hotel into a two-way four-lane (dual carriageway) road. In April 2018, Longjian Road & Bridge Co. Ltd. was awarded a 24-month-long contract worth RMB 133,216,189 for the implementation of this project.
Construction began October 2018.
In September 2020, the ZRDA posted on Facebook claiming the project was complete, but the 2021 Road Sector Annual Work Plan says works are on-going.
The Chinese project title is 赞比亚市政道路项目.It is unclear if China Eximbank disbursed any funding prior to the change in the source of financing; therefore, this project is status-coded as a pledge rather than a commitment for the time being.
