On January 7, 2018, the ignition ceremony was held for the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Biogas Demonstration Project.
A team was dispatched by the Chinese Government to provide technical assistance in the agriculture and animal husbandry areas.
The project seems to still be ongoing, and it is unclear where funding for the project comes from, but it is likely that it is sourced from the initial 5-year cooperation agreement signed in 2017 (#68381).
On February 22, 2018, Chinese Ambassador Wang Wei and the Sao Tome Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development agreed to extend the project into Phase II. This phase is slated to last two years and will include Chinese technical assistance to teach agriculture and fishing.
One source indicates that Phase I was more small-scale and experimental while Phase 2 will see the project be implemented more widely.
On April 12, 2018, an ignition ceremony was held with biogas developed by the technical assistance project (showcasing it can be used for cooking fuel) and the team of experts arrived in Sao Tome and Principe to begin the two-year aid mission.
On July 16, 2018, a few personnel from the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Technical Group traveled to China to showcase the development of the project and thank China for its contributions to Sao Tome’s agriculture sector.
The Portuguese project title is Biogás do Projecto Agrícola. The Chinese project title is 援圣普农牧业技术援助项目.
