Grant Description

In December 2010, the Chinese state councilor Lui Yandong signed an agreement to donate US$750,000 worth of scientific equipment to five Chilean universities that were rocked by the February 2010 earthquake.

The equipment was said to be donated as part of an ongoing commitment from China to help Chile research and develop clean energy, biotechnology, astronomy, and seismology.

According to data from the University of Chile, the awarded equipment was delivered on April 10th, and April 12th of 2012. The equipment included gas chromatograph, FT-IR spectrometer, binocular biological microscope, spectrophotometer.

📋 Staff Comments

The more conservative of the two figures mentioned in attached articles was coded as the transaction amount. The Chinese Embassy in Chile indicates an approximate value of 800,000 USD, while a Chilean news source indicates an approximate value of 750,000 USD. The English version of the Chilean news source incorrectly translates the original Spanish to 750 million, but the original Spanish indicates 750 thousand ('750 mil').
