Women Making a Difference

In rural eastern Guyana jobs have become scarce with the collapse of the sugar industry.

The frequent natural disasters that Guyana experiences further disrupt people?s livelihoods and access to basic services. Women have been particularly impacted.

Many stay in abusive relationships due to a lack of economic independence particularly when they are in situations of poverty and marginalization.

Our grantee Family Awareness Consciousness Togetherness (FACT) provides training and income generation opportunities to women and others in situations of vulnerability to improve their socioeconomic conditions and resilience to disasters. Having economic options helps to keep participants safe.

This grant is part of the IAF?s commitment to strengthen community-led disaster mitigation and resilience in the Caribbean and is advancing the U.S.-Caribbean Resilience Partnership and is also part of the IAF?s Women INvesting in Growth and Security (WINGS) initiative to empower women as business and community leaders.

Amendment Blurb FY24: This amendment provides FACT with an additional 36 months and $189,630 to replicate its business development training for additional vulnerable women and improve FACT?s internal financial management and communications systems.

FACT will also work with the women currently participating in FACT?s small-business incubator to strengthen their IT literacy and monitor their business development of the 27 women currently participating in FACT?s small-business incubator initiative.
