Grant Description

On December 9, 2010, China Harbour Engineering officially began work on a Chinese Government grant-financed Panadura Fishing Harbor Extension Project in Sri Lanka at a cost of RMB 62.24 million $7.3 million). The purpose of this project was to extend the breakwater at Panadura Fishing Harbor by 200 meters.

The project was expected to reach completion within 8 months, and it was ultimately completed on June 7, 2011. It was undertaken in response to the 2007 floods in Sri Lanka.

Upon completion, fishermen around Colombo port who previously had to travel to Mutwal and Beruwala harbours to anchor their vessel could use the Panadura harbour as an intermediate harbour.

This project is also known as the Panadura Harbor Breakwater Extension Project. The Chinese project title is 建渔港防波堤延长段项目 or 中国港湾承建的斯里兰卡帕拉杜纳援建渔港防波堤延长段项目.
The Panadura fishery harbour was damaged in the 2004 tsunami. It was subsequently reconstructed with a Chinese Government grant in 2005 (as captured via Project ID#33248).

Panadura fisheries harbour Southern breakwater opens on June 7 Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
