Grant Description

This amendment provides Cristosal with an additional 18 months and $250,000 to expand activities to an additional 8 municipalities in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala to strengthen systems of protection and livelihood options for internally displaced persons, including local protection committees.

Cristosal will train civil servants and community leaders on displacement, irregular migration, and security, as well as incorporating local data on displacement into its regional database.

Cristosal will also extend support for family relocation activities, and expand to Honduras and Guatemala its program to integrate internally displaced persons into local development strategies, making it more viable for them to rebuild their lives and not migrate abroad.

As part of the amendment, Cristolsal is mobilizing an additional $318,716 in counterpart resources to the grant agreement.Website Blurb:El Salvador has among the highest levels of internal displacement in Latin America driven by criminal gangs' threats, extortions, and assassinations.

This internal displacement is often a precursor to U.S.-bound irregular migration if internal migrants are unable to find safety elsewhere within the country. At the IAF, we support community-led approaches to enhance peace and security.

In five municipalities in El Salvador and one in Honduras, our grantee partner Cristosal works with local organizations and municipal authorities to strengthen systems of protection and development for internally displaced persons and ensure that they can exercise their rights as citizens in their own countries.

Cristosal is building the capacity of local stakeholders, involving internally displaced persons in the development activities of participating municipalities, carrying out exchanges between organizations, and documenting best practices. This grant is part of the IAF's efforts to address the root causes of irregular migration in Central America.
