According to email correspondence between AidData’s Executive Director and the Director General of the Office of the Secretary of State for Planning and Regional Integration in Guinea-Bissau, the Chinese Government provided a grant worth $2,250,000 to the Government of Guinea-Bissau for the Solar-Powered Streetlight Project.
China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) was the funding source.
This project, which was implemented in two phases, involved the installation of 110 solar-powered lighting along two main roads in the city of Bissau measuring 3850 meters in length.
The ultimate purpose of the project was to alleviate the power and lighting shortage in the city of Bissau, as well as to improve the city’s safety conditions at night. In February 2013, the Chinese Ambassador to Guinea-Bissau, Li Baojun, visited the project site. Then, on April 23, 2013, the Chinese Government donated 110 solar-powered street lights.
The project was completed and officially handed over to the Government of Guinea-Bissau on November 8, 2016. Staff Note: The Portuguese project title is Projecto reabilitacao do sector energetico. The grant commitment year is unknown. It is coded as 2013 for the time being (based on the approximate project implementation year).
