Grant Description

On 2 March 2012, the Chinese Ministry of Education signed a financing agreement committing to provide $8 million over four years to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The purpose of this project was to accelerate progress towards providing education for all, and the education-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Phase 1 of the UNESCO-China Funds-in-Trust (CFIT) Project (or “Harnessing Technology for Quality Teacher Training in Africa” Project) began in 2012.

The beneficiaries included: 1) Côte d’Ivoire (2012 – 2015) (Record ID#86930) 2) Ethiopia (2012 – 2015) (Record ID#86932) 3) Namibia (2012 – 2015) (Record ID#86936) 4) Republic of Congo (2013 –2016) (Record ID#86937) 5) Democratic Republic of Congo (2013 –2016) (Record ID#37315) 6) Liberia (2013 –2016) (Record ID#30767) 7) Tanzania (2013 –2016) (Record ID#86938) 8) Uganda (2013 –2016) (Record ID#37942) Phase 1 implementation began in around June 2013 and concluded in 2016.

However, CFIT continued to support these countries between 2017 and 2018 with the implementation of Phase 2 (see Record ID#85129). Phase 2 would expand the countries included in the project to Zambia (Record ID#52408) and Togo (Record ID#86939). Since 2012, the program has held "over 100 training workshops and trained over 10,000 teacher educators.

More than 230 teacher training modules or policy documents have been developed or revised, and are being institutionalized. Over 2,400 pieces of equipment were purchased and installed.

Seven online teaching and learning platforms and three digital libraries were established, linking over 30 teacher training institutions."
