Grant Description

Colombian farmers in the Cauca department have limited opportunity to generate additional income from their cultivation of sugarcane and scallions.

Indigenous community governance organization Cabildo Indgena del Resguardo de Guambia (Guambia) collaborates with Guambiano residents to improve their production, processing and marketing techniques to increase their income. At the IAF, we support community-led solutions to expand economic opportunity in Colombia.

Guambia?s activities promote smallholder agriculture and food production to enhance food security and ensure meaningful opportunities for communities to thrive.

Amendment FY20:This amendment provides Guambia an additional $51,370 to mitigate the health and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on community residents.

The crisis creates grave risks for these communities, where public health infrastructure is already lacking and stay-at-home orders reduce family incomes.

Guambia is facilitating the purchase and sale of agricultural goods from local families; implementing safe disease control practices for all visitors and residents returning to the township; and improving virtual connectivity.

Amendment FY22: This amendment provides Guambia with an additional six months and $52,280 to gain the necessary technical assistance to consolidate its working capital funds, reorient its productive and marketing activities in the face of COVID-19 to become more resilient to external shocks, and continue to improve its own capacity to manage grant activities.

Guambia is mobilizing an additional $21,650 in counterpart resources to the grant agreement.

Amendment FY24:This amendment provides Guambia with an additional 18 months and $125,749 to consolidate commercial activities in the panela value chain, strengthen both participating grassroots organizations (ASUNTAP and ASOYAMI) and incorporate new activities to promote food security and agricultural diversificati
