In August 2016, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Zhao Yanbo, and Sierra Leone's Health and Sanitation Minister signed an agreement for the fifth "Guangmingxing" project which will provide free cataract surgeries to Sierra Leone.
Ambassador Zhao emphasized that the past four similar project have successfully helped thousands of cataract patients to regain their bright future and the forthcoming fifth “Guangmingxing” event will continue the previous successful experience and benefit more people in Sierra Leone. The Chinese National Health and Family Planning Commission supported the project.
In November 2016, the project was officially launched in the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital in Jui, Freetown.
According to the agreement, the Chinese medical team will perform hundreds of free cataract surgeries, and donate a batch of ophthalmological instrument and materials.
China will also hold some lectures on ophthalmological health and boost technical cooperation between the medical staff from China and Sierra Leone about cataract surgery. On December 5, 2016, the "Brightness Trip to Sierra Leone" officially ended.
