On August 24, 2014, the Chinese Government and the Government of Comoros signed letters of exchange related to the Malouzini Sports Stadium Construction Project.
Then, on March 25, 2016, the Chinese Economic and Commercial Counsellor's Office in Comoros signed an implementation agreement for the project. China’s Ministry of Commerce was the source of funding and it reportedly committed RMB 180 million of grant funding. The project involved the construction of a 10,000 seat stadium in the capital city of Moroni.
It includes a football field with a natural lawn and an athletics track with 8 lanes measuring 400 meters in length.
China IPPR International Engineering Company was the contractor responsible for project design and Shanghai Construction Group was the contractor responsible for project implementation. On May 21, 2016, a formal groundbreaking ceremony took place. However, project implementation did not begin until October 16, 2016.
The project passed mid-term MOFCOM inspection in January 2018 and it was officially completed and handed over to the Government of Comoros on May 22, 2019.
This project is also known as the Moroni Stadium Project. The Chinese project title is 援科莫罗尼体育场项目 or 科摩罗莫罗尼体育场项目 or 摩罗莫罗尼体育场项目 or 莫罗尼体育场项目. The French project title is Stade de Malouzini Palais Omnisports de Malouzini or Stade Olympique de Moroni-Malouzini or La construction du Stade Olympique de Moroni or Construction et équipement du stade olympique National et son gymnase.
