Residents in the La Vega, Duarte and San Jos de Ocoa provinces have limited access to clean water and reliable electricity.
Guakia Ambiente works with rural communities to construct, maintain and operate community-run micro hydroelectric systems that generate energy using the natural flow of water and supports opportunities for Dominicans in education, healthcare and income generation. At the IAF, we support community-led solutions to expand economic opportunity in the Dominican Republic.
Guakia Ambiente?s activities bolster efforts to counteract environmental degradation and protect the natural resources that communities depend on.
Amendment FY17 :GUAKIA AMBIENTE will strengthen the Red Dominicana para el Desarrollo Sostenible de las Energas Renovables (REDSER), a network of grassroots organizations engaged in renewable energy, and expand agroforestry systems based on cacao farming with the residents of Magazin, Haiti, located on the northeastern border with the Dominican Republic.
Amendment FY22 :This amendment provides Guakia Ambiente with an additional three years and $140000 to bring solar electricity to residents of the community of Chambeln Haiti at the border with the Dominican Republic.
Guakia Ambiente will also train at least three community organizations in administrative management and sustainable agroforestry.
As part of the amendment Guaka Ambiente is mobilizing an additional $289920 in counterpart funding to the grant agreement.
Amendment FY23 :This amendment provides Guakia Ambiente an additional $92,300 to provide small grants and technical support to two community-based organizations, Grupo Solidario de Gestin Comunitaria and La Asociacin de Guas Palero Ecoaventura.
This support allows them to build sustainable sources of income for households by increasing local cocoa production, processing capacity, and sales revenue, as well as expanding community-based ecotourism activit
