Grant Description

This amendment provides Guakia Ambiente with an additional three years and $140,000 to bring solar electricity to residents of the community of Chambeln, Haiti, at the border with the Dominican Republic.

Guakia Ambiente will also train at least three community organizations in administrative management and sustainable agroforestry.

As part of the amendment, Guaka Ambiente is mobilizing an additional $289,920 in counterpart funding to the grant agreement.Residents in the La Vega, Duarte and San Jos de Ocoa provinces in the Dominican Republic and northeastern Haiti have limited access to clean water and reliable electricity.

Guakia Ambiente works with rural communities to construct, maintain and operate community-run micro hydroelectric and solar systems that generate energy using the natural flow of water and sunlight to support opportunities for Dominicans and Haitians in education, healthcare and income generation.

At the IAF, we support community-led solutions to expand economic opportunity in the Dominican Republic and its immediate environs.

Guakia Ambiente's activities bolster efforts to counteract environmental degradation and protect the natural resources on which communities depend.
