Grant Description

Artisanal fishers often struggle to survive in Brazil?s Northeastern coast due to the expansion of coastal tourism, environmental degradation, and difficulties accessing government programs and financial opportunities.

The IAF supports community-led solutions for fishers to expand their economic opportunities, leadership skills, and financial autonomy in Brazil .

IAF grantee Conselho Pastoral dos Pescadores Regional Nordeste II (CPP-NE) is working in collaboration with artisanal fishers to improve their livelihoods, strengthen their organizations and promote community development and resource mobilization in the poorest parts of the northeastern states of Alagoas, Pernambuco, Paraba and Rio Grande do Norte.

The grant will support 15 traditional fishing communities to guarantee access to coastal and riverine fishing areas and protect their livelihoods, aiming to overcome socio-environmental impacts and improve their social and economic conditions.
