On February 4, 2016, the Government of the People's Republic of China granted about MK1.68 billion to the Government of Malawi to support the Agricultural Technical Cooperation Farm Project. The project falls under Phase II of the Malawi-China Agricultural Technical Cooperation Project.
Support for this project is drawn from the Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement signed between the two governments in December 2009.
The project includes building some infrastructure facilities, providing necessary equipment and goods, provision of eight experts to provide technical services in agricultural production, experiment and offering customized training courses. The goal is to improve agricultural productivity mainly in horticultural crop production in Malawi.
On March 29, 2018, officials from the Chinese Embassy, UN representatives, and other diplomats in Malawi toured the completed farm, observing features such as greenhouses, demonstration fields, orchid nurseries, training facilities, and agriculture student dormitories.
Chinese experts then updated the visitors on the farm's progress and discussed the state of training and technology, along with answering questions from the visitors.
On October 12, 2018, Ambassador Liu Hongyang visited the farm at the invitation of Joseph Mwanamweka, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Resources. They examined the facilities and then heard a report from the China Agricultural Technology Expert Group.
1. This project represents Phase II of the multi-phase China Aid Agricultural Technical Cooperation Project in Malawi. It follows an earlier Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement signed in December 2009 and precedes the documented Phase III handover in October 2024 (record ID #111123). While this project includes significant infrastructure, training, and expert dispatch, no publicly available evidence has been found confirming the existence of a formally designated “Phase I.”
