Grant Description
On 31 October 2016, China and Myanmar launched a friendship forest ecological project in Yangon with representatives of the two countries jointly planting saplings symbolising bilateral friendship. The project is referred to as 中缅友好生态示范林 in Chinese.
On April 10, 2017, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Myanmar and the State Forestry Administration of the People's Republic of China signed a memorandum of understanding on forestry cooperation in Beijing.
The first phase of the China-Myanmar friendship forest ecological project was funded with 500 million kyats from the Chinese embassy to plant 15,000 saplings covering an area of 100 acres in Magwe Region and is targeted for completion in 2017. The project was completed on August 31, 2017.
The Chinese side hoped to help Myanmar speed up the realisation of reforestation and the reservation of sufficient forest resources for sustainable development of national ecological security as well as the creation of conditions for the development of agro-economy.
