Grant Description

On 27 July 2015, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on the Popua Access Road Project (aka Popua Road Upgrade Project).

While a groundbreaking ceremony was held, as of March 2017 the project had not yet begun construction, and had only just received its environmental assessment. The estimated cost is TOP 12 million. It is unclear how much of this cost China agreed to cover, and there is no record of financing commitment.

This project includes about 300 meters of climate resistant road to provide a stable connection between Popua Village and Houmakelikao village, which sits on higher ground.

The upgrades will include earthworks, subgrade preparation, new pavement, chipseal, drainage systems, road markings, and raising the road 356mm above the ground.
