Grant Description

Chinese Government pledges $38M USD loan for telecommunication upgrades On June 18, 2006, the government of China agreed to lend the Government of Ghana $38 million to help the west African country upgrade its telecommunication network.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao offered the low-interest loan package during talks with Ghana's President John Kufuor in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

The money will be used to boost Ghana's communications infrastructure by increasing the number of phone lines and improving Internet access.

The $38 million USD loan is part of a larger $66 million USD loan that will also finance medical programs, schools, and a malaria treatment facility in Ghana using Chinese expertise (captured in #1741).
