Grant Description

On December 22, 2000, in apparent defiance of the United Nations embargo on air travel to Iraq, an Air China Limited plane — carrying a 69-member government delegation and a shipment of humanitarian aid — arrived at Saddam International Airport in Baghdad, Iraq.

The delegation, led by State Councilor Ismail Amat, included ministry officials from foreign affairs, health, and foreign trade and economic cooperation officials, accompanied by members of the Red Cross Society of China. The exact monetary value of this donation, as well as the composition of the humanitarian materials, is unknown.

The Air China flight was the the first Chinese aircraft to land in Iraq since the U.N. imposed sanctions against Iraq in 1990 following its invasion of Kuwait.
