In 2009, Project "Technology Transfer Arroz" was established between the two Ministries of Science and Technology of China and Costa Rica, in order to support Costa Rican rice sector in improving quality and performance of its rice production. On April 29, 2010, Dr.
Bernardo Mora, head of The State Agricultural and Husbandry Research Institute of Costa Rica, announced that NP833, a breed of hybrid rice presented by the Chinese side, had been successfully planted in Costa Rica. The NP833 rice strain showed a higher yield potential, resistant to diseases and good adaptation to local climate.
The intended result is twice the average rice production in Costa Rica.
