In February 2010, China pledged to donate 1,200 tons of fertilizer to Fiji later that month. The aid was requested because of floods that had occurred in January 2009.
The fertilizer would be distributed by Fiji's Ministry of Agriculture to farmers in Dreketi, Labasa, Koronivia, and Sigatoka that were badly affected by the disaster.
South Pacific Fertilizers Ltd. (SPF) board chairman John May said the fertilizer would be shared among farmers and cane growers in the island nation.
The fertilizer company will work closely with the Sugar Cane Growers Council and the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji to determine farmers who would receive the donation.
On March 3, 2010, a handover ceremony for 1,175 tons of chemical fertilizer was held with Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Han Zhiqiang and Fiji’s Minister of Primary Industries, Yokhetani Sokanasinga, signing the handover certificate.
