On September 18, 2006, the Chinese government donated 500 tons of rice to Timor-Leste in a handover ceremony held in Dili, capital of Timor-Leste.

The food aid was intended as emergency humanitarian assistance for victims of natural disasters, refugees and vulnerable people in Timor-Leste.
