On 29 March 2005, an 8.7 magnitude earthquake hit Nias island, North Sumatra in Indonesia. It destroyed communities and valuable facilities including the local Sotoli Hill Hospital.
In response, in 2005, the Chinese Government provided a $1.5 million USD grant to the Government of Indonesia's Aceh and Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency for Phase II of the Sotoli Hill Hospital Reconstruction Project. The second phase of the construction, which was the phase funded by China, was completed on November 9, 2007.
On 2 April 2009, Phase II of the Sotoli Hill Hospital Reconstruction Project was officially complete. Works included the building of patient wards, laundry facilities, and a kitchen.
Also known as 索托利山医院 or Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah Gunungsitoli. The other phases of the hospital reconstruction were funded by Malaysia, Japan, and Singapore.
