Grant Description

On March 4, 2011, the Tonga and China governments signed a new agreement for China to provide Tonga with a 20 million RMB grant. Under the ETCA, the aid funds may be used for projects that are yet to be agreed upon by both governments.

The prime minister, Lord Tu'ivakano, and the ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Tonga, HE Mr Wang Donghua, signed the agreement of economic and technical cooperation on behalf of their respective governments.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Tonga's Ministry of Finance and National Planning and the China Development Bank would handle the disbursement procedures.

📋 Staff Comments

AidData has coded the funding agency as MOFCOM as it is the sole administrator of China’s ETCAs. The sources reflect the fact that MOFCOM disbursed the loan through a bank account that the borrower established with China Development Bank.
