Grant Description

In 2003, the People's Republic of China announced it intended to enhance its diplomatic ties with the Pacific Islands Forum, and increase the economic aid package it provided to that organisation.

China's highest-ranking foreign official who oversees the Pacific territory, He Yafei, told a Pacific media delegation on a goodwill visit to Beijing that his government expects to sign a new aid package with Fiji in the week of Sept. 1.

The signing ceremony for the agreement between Fiji President Ratu Josefa Iloilo and Chinese president Hu Jintao was scheduled on 3 September 2003. The details of the package was unknown.
