On September 12, 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced an aid package of 200 million yuan (approx. $32.54 million) for West African countries to combat Ebola.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, the aid was allocated for providing protection, treatment, food and material assistance, to continue providing medical teams, bio-safety laboratories, other emergency rescue equipment and facilities, as well as donations to the heavily affected African Countries, the African Union, and the World Food Program.
According to a 2017 NIH publication, the aid was used as follows: The commitment and support for continuing to send experts to Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea on a monthly rotation.
The transport of a bio-safety level three laboratory to Sierra Leone, as well as medical experts to staff the facilities (see Record ID#44339).
Representatives from the Virus Disease Control and Prevention Office of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) (see Record ID#45022). The provision of a mobile laboratory and accompanying team to Sierra Leone (see Record ID#35409).
The provision of $6 million in financial support to Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea through World Food Program (projects #45060, #44593, #64640) as well as $2 million to African Union (Record ID#44589).
The provision of medical supplies for the prevention and treatment of Ebola to nearby countries, including Benin, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville), and Senegal.
