On May 12, 2014, China and Kenya signed a record of 15 agreements to enhance cooperation. One of them is to establish the International Language and Culture Center at Kenyatta University in Kenya. The Chinese Government provided a grant worth 1.09 billion to support the implementation of this project.
On March 15, 2016, the 'kick-off' ceremony for the construction of the International Language and Culture Center at was held at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya; among those present were Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Liu Xianfa, university officials and 200 students.
The Center occupies 10,560 meters and it houses the Confucius Institute, the Institute of Africa Studies, local and foreign language laboratories and international cultural center. Fujian Construction Engineering was the implementing contractor.
The International Language and Culture Center was officially completed and handed over to Kenyatta University on January 24, 2019.
One source reports that the Center is funded by interest-free credit from Chinese government and will cost 1.2 billion Kenya Shillings ($1.18 million).
