Grant Description

On December 31, 2004, Wen announced that China will donate an additional 500 million yuan (60.46 million US dollars) of regional humanitarian aid to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami victims.

Soon after the tidal wave tragedy, China had announced an aid package of over two million US dollars (see Record ID#35032). China additionally sent rescue and medical teams to countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia.

The recipient countries include Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Thailand, Kenya, Somalia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Seychelles, as well as an Indian prime minister foundation.

On January 6, 2005, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attended an emergency Tsunami summit of heads of governments of ASEAN to jointly chalk out regional plans on disaster prevention.

Wen had a meeting with Ambassadors from ten countries, including India, which were hit badly by the tidal wave on December 26, 2004, killing over 150,000 people.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Financial Tracking Service, the US$200,000 donation to Myanmar is apart of this pledge (see Record ID#39187).

Additionally, OCHA reports US$38,943,45 million of the pledge remained uncommitted and was allocated for "UN Agencies/NGOs and/or the Red Cross."
