In July 2013, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the Nepali Army (NA) signed an RMB 59 million (Rs 917 million) grant agreement (‘protocol’) for the acquisition of two mobile hospital units.
This agreement was signed by between Nepal’s Chief of Army Staff Gaurav Shumsher Rana and his Chinese (PLA) counterpart Fang Fenghui, during the former's visit to China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) general staff headquarters in Beijing.
The mobile hospital units were to be used in times of disaster to provide medical assistance to victims on location, as they are easy to transport and set up.
The two hospitals, which were outfitted with emergency beds, a critical care holding area, a fully digital X-ray unit, a small lab, a blood bank and operating rooms, can accommodate between 26 and 50 patients at a time.
The mobile hospital units also contain surgical processing units with autoclave, surgical equipment disposal unit, a central medical supply with stores and an administrative with command control unit. The two mobile hospital units were successfully delivered to the NA on April 27, 2015.
This project is linked to Record ID#34439, in which the Chinese Government committed Rs 778 million for military assistance during the same visit.
