Grant Description

In 2013, China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC) pledged 32 million USD to compensate farmers who were displaced due to railway construction for twin oil and gas pipelines.

Local officials report that residents received full compensation of 4 million kyat ($4,625) per hectare of land lost, but some residents claim that they received no such compensation.

A CNPC official responded by saying that it is difficult to provide compensation for previous landowners because most land on Maday Island was registered as vacant, and most residents do not have official land ownership documentation. Whether or not the total pledged amount was delivered is unclear.
