Grant Description

In November 2006, the Chinese Government announced that it would fund the construction of the Elisabeth Domitien Hospital in the Central African Republic at the Forum on China-African Cooperation in Beijing. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce subsequently committed an RMB 100 million grant for this project.

This project involved the construction of a 100-bed hospital in the city of Bimbo, which is the capital of the Ombella-M'poko prefecture.

The hospital offers surgical services, gynaecological services, obstetrical services, pediatric services, ophthalmological services, radiology and dental treatments. China Electronics Engineering Design Institute was the contractor responsible for implementation. A formal groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 30, 2009.

However, construction itself did not begin until March 2020. Construction ended in September 2011, and a formal hospital inauguration ceremony took place on October 4, 2011.

It was attended by the Central African Republic's President Francois Bozize and the Chinese Ambassador to the Central African Republic, Sun Haichao.

The Chinese Ambassador indicated that the Chinese Government would provide equipment worth $1.5 million to ensure proper functioning of the hospital.

The total value of the grant commitment for this project, including construction and equipment, was 4.5 billion CFA, according to African Economic Outlook.

📋 Staff Comments

This project is also known as the Bimbo Hospital Construction Project and the China-Africa General Hospital Construction Project. The Chinese project title is 援中非综合医院项目. The Chinese Government announced the project in 2006, but it is unclear if it was a formal or informal agreement. It is possible that no formal agreement was signed until closer to the groundbreaking ceremony in 2009.
