In 2012, the Chinese Government agreed to provide a grant 460 million ouguiyas for a Solar Street Light Demonstration Project in Mauritania.
This project involved the installation of 404 single-headed, 6-meter-high LED solar street lights on 5.2 km of roads in the city of Akjoujt of Inchiri Province. Poly New Energy Technology Co. Ltd. was the contractor responsible for implementation. On November 27, 2012, this project was officially completed and handed over to the local authorities.
The Chinese project title is 援毛里塔尼亚太阳能示范项目. The French project title is Projet du système d'éclairage des rues de la ville par le biais de l'énergie solaire. This project should not be confused with a 1200 solar street lights project in Nouakchott that was going to be funded in 2010 by China Eximbank but that eventually became embroiled in a scandal.
