IPPR has launched a new international programme which seeks to achieve two outcomes: 1.
Progressive policymakers in the UK understand the transformations shaping geopolitics, and how international partners (eg US, Europe, the countries of the ‘Global South’) are responding to them. 2. Progressive policymakers in the UK know what these shifts mean for the UK and have distinctly progressive responses.
This includes policy on international development, trade, and wider foreign policy, as well as issues which cross domestic and foreign policy such as climate, science and R&D, and finance. To achieve this, IPPR will deliver three policy briefings in the programme's first phase, to mid 2025. These will cover: 1.
The geopolitical context - Is this the end of globalisation? What is happening to global co-operation? How should progressives understand and respond to the current moment? 2. UK and the Global South - Can the UK form new partnerships with the countries of the ‘Global South’? How do we use tools – including development policy – to build mutually valued relationships of respect? 3.
Green growth - Can the UK be a leader in green growth? What partnerships are needed to enable this? How must its international policy toolkit evolve?
