Grant Description

Africa has received little attention in health-climate impacts attribution studies.

Key reasons include low levels of funding and human capacity for climate-health research and a lack of easily accessible digital health and climate data and analysis tools.

AFRIVERSE aims to address this by developing new African climate and health data, digital tools for data access, analysis and visualisation, and human capacity, in parallel with delivering several Africa-focused attribution studies undertaken by teams of African scientists hosted at ASCEND, the University of Cape Town's new climate and development science synthesis centre.

Key outputs from AFRIVERSE will be (i) attribution studies on heat-illness, NCD indicators and hospital admissions for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases; (ii) bias-corrected, ready to use, climate model attribution data for climate-health impacts attribution research; (iii) new health data for Africa; (iv) an interactive digital data platform; (v) research on approaches to communicating attribution studies; (vi) strategic engagement and outreach with policy and practice actors; (vii) a summer school on climate-health impacts attribution for early career African researchers.
