The Office of Radiological Security (ORS) plays an important role in preventing radiological terrorism at home and abroad by working with partners to secure radioactive materials that could be used in acts of terrorism.
Radioactive materials, especially those in the form of radioactive sources, are used worldwide to diagnose and treat diseases such as cancer, to sterilize medical instruments and food, and to monitor the structural integrity of materials and industrial processes.
These same radioactive sources, if not adequately protected, pose a risk to the safety and security of our Nation and the international community.
