The construction industry, known for its low profit margins, high energy consumption, significant greenhouse gas emissions, and extensive waste, urgently requires a transition towards more sustainable and efficient practices. Digital transformation presents a promising solution; however, studies showed its adoption and integration is slow and fragmented, attributed largely to a lack of cohesive strategic frameworks.
This project aims to bridge this gap by developing a comprehensive framework for digital transformation, exploring effective change management strategies, quantifying the sustainability impacts of digitalisation, and assessing its economic implications. The goal is to steer the construction sector towards better sustainability and operational efficiency.
To understand these challenges, a literature review will be undertaken to address the following objectives: evaluate the current adoption, integration, and impact of digital technologies across different types of construction projects; identify the obstacles and challenges to the widespread adoption of digital technologies in the construction industry; and explore the nexus between digital transformation and environmental impact: how can digital technologies increase circularity in the construction industry.
Based on the findings from a literature review, the project will utilise a mixed-methods approach, adopting both quantitative and qualitative research techniques to create a framework for digital transformation in the construction industry with a focus on increasing circularity. The student may need to conduct surveys and interviews with key stakeholders in the construction sector to collect data on the current adoption and integration of digital technologies.
