This question directly challenges the assumptions of the World Religions Paradigm through an ethnographic lived religion approach. My masters thesis observed the use of the term of "Sikhism" rather than the preferred term Sikhi.
I used an ethnographic lived religion approach to understand how the term affects identity, as well as tracing its nuances and development within scholarship.
My proposed PhD research would expand on this to investigate how to move past racist, colonialist, and orientalist understandings of Sikhs.
