The first millennium AD in Britain and Ireland was a period of dynamic social and political change.
Whilst recent research has sought to better understand these complex transformations, the impact of climatic shifts, such as the 536 AD climatic downturn, remain largely absent.
Utilising a unique blend of humanities and science-based approaches and compare the cultural impacts of major climate events in Britain and Ireland, this research will better understand this complex period and the factors determining past resilience and vulnerability, with significant relevance to how contemporary society can grapple with the huge challenges that climate change poses.
